Gruha Pravesam

Gruha Pravesam ceremony is performed to purify the newly constructed home and to have a peaceful life for the household going to live there. The auspicious date and time to carry out the ceremony will be decided by the priest.

For this happy occasion, the entire house is decorated with the fresh flowers and colorful lights. The Thoranam made of mango leaves is tied up to the main door at the entrance along with the other doors in the house. At the Muhurtham time, amidst the traditional classical music of Sanni melam and the priest reciting slokas, the couple will enter into their new home followed by, family members and close relative and the cow with calf.

While the couple carries photos of god, the other family members will carry rest of the items such as a bowl of salt, a vessel of water (Pasupu dharam tho Pasupu kommukattali), a bowl of yoghurt and a bowl of chilli powder, a bag of rice, Kudumulu in Idli cooker, a pumpkin, Sallagunja etc  each while entering the new home.

Go-Puja is performed to the Cow with Calf by applying Turmeric and Vermilion to them. Thambulam with new blouse piece, rice and Dhakshina is offered to them in a white towel that will be tied around their neck.

The priest will direct the new couple to each room in the house, where they will offer coconut, Pasupu-Kumkuma to the door while the priest recites slokas.

Kudumulu made with rice flour, jaggery, and black-eyed peas are prepared for this occasion. A fun-filled game is played with Kudumulu during this occasion; When the wife tosses up 5 of them to the ceiling, her sister-in-law would have to catch them with her saree pallu. This game is played in each room of the house including the living room.

While the couple conducts the puja, sister-in-law will boil the milk until the milk boils over to signify abundance. Nivedyam is prepared using boiled milk, rice and Jaggery that will be offered to the god. The new utensils required to boil the milk and to prepare Naivedhyam are bought by the sister-in-law. New clothes are offered to her and her family during this occasion.

After that puja, the couple will offer a coconut to the Sallagunja arrangement followed by preparing buttermilk. The guests will follow the same.

How to Make Sprouts

Moong Dal Salad (Pesara Guggilu)

Moong dal salad is a protein-rich food that can be served as a healthy snack both for kids and adults after they get home from school/work. I would say this is one of the best refreshment for Gestational Diabetic mommies out there when you would like to have a light bite. You can have this prepared in 10 min with few preparations ahead.

Ingredients:

  • Moong dal – One cup
  • Onions – 1/2 cup
  • Green chillies – 1
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tea spoon
  • cumin seeds – 1 tea spoon
  • oil – 2 Table spoons
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Lemon – half
  • Salt – to the taste

Recipe:

First, soak the moong dal for 2 hours. Then rinse them well with clean water; Simmer them in a salted water until they are tender (shouldn’t take more than 5-8 min). Remove the excess water if any and keep them aside. Then do the tempering (Tadka) in a medium pan; Add chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves to Tadka; Saute them for a minute. Now add the boiled moong dal and mix them up well for few seconds. Then add the lemon and mix it well one last time. That’s it! Your moong dal salad is ready !!!

Bhogipallu Ceremony

Bhogipallu Ceremony is performed to the children, usually below 12 years, on the day of Bhogi festival before the sunset. It is believed that this ritual will protect the children from any evil eye (called “Nara Dishti” in Telugu) and will bless them with better health and abundance of prosperity.

Friends, family, and neighbors are invited to participate in this fun-filled event. Bhogipallu mix is prepared by mixing up the “Regipallu”, coins,  flowers, Akshinthalu, and pieces of sugarcane. As “Regi pallu” represents the Sun in its shape, color, and brightness, we hope to get his blessing through these fruits.

For this happy event, the children will be attired in traditional clothes, wear ornaments, and have the kumkuma applied on their face (and turmeric applied to the feet if it is a girl). The child will be seated facing East in a chair. The mother of the child takes a handful of Bogipallu and moves her hand in a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction for 3 times each in front of the child, while uttering “irugu dishti, porugu dishti, intlo valla dishti, bhayata valla dishti, antha povali” and shower the Bogipallu on the head of the child. The guests will follow the same procedure to bless the child/children.

At the end of the event, Harathi is offered to the child/children. The guests are offered with Thambulam (2 beetle leaves, beetle but, two fruits). After the event, showered Bogipallu are offered to the homeless or can be thrown away in a place where they cannot be touched by the feet.

Cradle Ceremony (Uyyala Function)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This is one of the very first ceremonies performed to the newborn baby on his/her 21st day. It can be performed at home, banquet hall or at the temple as you like. We had it at home for our baby girl.  This ceremony is performed to put the baby in the cradle for the first time.

Friends and family can be invited to be part of this event. Check out the auspicious time of the day to carry out this ceremony. Some people prefer to go to the temple before the ceremony. We went to the temple and had abhishekam performed to lord Shiva. We have also done puja at home to purify the house.

Decorate the swing to your imagination. Apply turmeric and vermillion (pasupu kumkuma) to the swing first. Then decorate it with flowers and garlands. We use mother’s thalambralu saree as a bed sheet in the swing. Thambulam  (beetle leaves, beetle nut, two bananas, one coin, flower) is placed at each corner of the swing as well as under the swing. Baby gets to wear a new dress for this ceremony, preferably Pattulanga.

Elders in the family gently places the child in the swing for the first time, blesses him/her with Askshithalu and swings the baby at a slow pace for 3 times. Also they will break a coconut and shower its water on to the swing  for the prosperity of the child.

Then we will ask the guests to bless the baby and gently swing the cradle for her to get used to it.  Offer pasupu kumkuma to the female guests in the beginning of the event. Offer thambulam to each female guest as they bless the baby. Food is served to the guests after the event.

Note: The day baby was born is counted as day 1. If the baby is born on Jan 1st, then the 21st day will be Jan 21st.

Annaprasana

The “Anna Prasana” ceremony is performed for the child to introduce the solid food. This ritual is held on the 6th day of the 6th month of the child. For example, if your child was born on 1st of January, then the ceremony date will be 6th of June. By this age, the child will have his/her first teeth sprouted which is one of those indications that he/she is ready to digest solids. If the child is weak, this ritual can be performed on the 8th day of 8th month. If you cannot perform this ritual on these two days, you can choose an auspicious day in the 6th month or in the 8th month as per Thidi, Vara, Nakshatra to conduct this event.

This ceremony is carried out either at the temple (Annapurna Devi temple is preferred) or at the home with help of a priest. The host family (parents of the child) invites the guests to attend this event. The paternal grandparents would bring a silver bowl and spoon to offer the first food, Sweet Payasam, to the baby.

Payasam is made of rice, cow’s milk, jaggery, and ghee. Do not use nuts or cardamom. Cook it to a paste-like consistency for easy digestion for the  child.

After the bath, dress up the baby in new clothes (bought by his/her parents or grandparents preferably). Arrange the puja items requested by the priest. The priest will conduct this ritual by reciting prayers to the lord Ganesha followed by goddess Annapurna Devi and to your favorite deity. Payasam is offered to the deities as “Prasadam” in a silver bowl.  After the puja, the priest will ask the father to feed the “Payasam Prasadam”  to the child. The father dips the golden ring in the Payasam bowl and offers to the baby to lick on it while the priest chants the “mantras”. He feeds the baby for three times and blesses him/her with Akshithalu. The same process is followed by the grandparents, mother, and guests at the event. During the ritual, the child sits in his/her mother’s lap  or with the person he/she is comfortable with facing east. From now on, solid foods can be given to the child in small quantities.

A fun filled game is held after the event. During this game, the baby is encouraged to crawl and pick up the objects placed near him/her. If your baby is not crawling yet, feel free to lay the objects closer to the baby so that he/she can reach out to them using hands. The objects such as fruits, gold, money, book&pen, food, toys, flowers etc are laid in a row on a red carpet/cloth since the bright colors attract the babies at this age. Each object signifies something to do with baby’s future. The baby will have three attempts to catch the objects. It is believed that the first object touched by the baby symbolizes his/her future.  For example, if your baby chooses Book & pen, he/she is believed to be blessed with knowledge and wisdom. If the child catches the same object more than once, he/she is believed to be excelled in that sector.

Book & Pen –  Blessed with knowledge and wisdom

Fruits –  Blessed with Good health

Gold / Money –  Blessed with wealth

Payasam / Sweets/Food items –  Blessed with passion for food

“Dhakshina” is offered to the Priest after the puja to get his blessings. Lunch or dinner is served to the guests after the main event is over. If the event is performed at the temple, you may have to purchase a ticket from the temple separately.

Ear Piercing Ceremony

Ear Piercing Ceremony (Chevulu Kuttinchadam) is performed to the girl child (in some cultures also for boy child) when they are completing odd months like 7th, 9th or 11th month. If is this ritual is not carried out in their first year, then it can be conducted in the odd years like 3rd or 5th. Usually, in Andhra, this event is combined with the “first-time head shaving” (puttu ventrukalu theyadamu) ceremony.

This ritual is usually performed at the temples. An auspicious day is chosen with the help of a priest to conduct this event under the sunlight . This event is conducted by child’s maternal grandparents and her uncle (menamama).

Carry puja items (like turmeric, kumkuma, coconut, flowers, incense sticks) to the temple where the ritual is performed. Abhishekam is offered to god on behalf of the baby girl. After puja, she will get her head shaved off while the child sits in her maternal uncle’s lap (menamana). The barber will apply the alum (Patika) or sandalwood paste (gandham) on shaved head to treat any cuts. A monetary gift along with a white towel and 1 or 2 kg of rice is offered to the barber after the ritual. Also, the dress which baby was wearing for head shaving ceremony is given to the barber.

After that, both the child and her uncle will take a holy bath at the temple and wears new clothes offered. For the baby girl, new clothes are offered by maternal grandparents, while for her uncle new clothes are offered by her paternal grandparents.

Then she will get her ears pierced by the goldsmith while the child sits in her uncle’s lap. Left ear is pierced first for the girls, right ear in case of baby boys.  A monetary gift is offered to the goldsmith after the event.
